Dear Supreme Being of the Universe,

I am going to buy a lottery ticket on the way home from work today. I know since you are infinitely wise, and powerful enough to answer my prayers, and apparently willing to, this should be a snap.

Can you please make all the numbers selected be the same as the numbers on my lottery ticket?

Thanks again for your help with the government!

Amen.

Â

I think I’ve scared all my religious friends away with all my logic and reasoning, but since I’m a glutton, I’ve got another religious thing to talk about.

Heaven.

You get to spend the rest of time with the family members that also make it there. That sounds pretty sweet. But it’s also where my problem starts.

You live your life in a Godly way, always praying the right way, going through the right motions, choosing the right religion, and early on, you found the woman of your dreams and you marry her. You’re happily married for say, hypothetically, 25 years. Then one day, she dies.

Yeah, you’re sad and all, and you miss her, but you decide you need to move on with your life and find another woman to marry. You stay married to this second person for say, hypothetically, 25 years. Then one day, you both die.

So, regardless of the timing of when you actually get to heaven, whether it’s right after you die, or you have to wait for a while, let’s just assume all three make it there.

So, what happens now? Do the two women split time with the man? Are there two copies of the man so he doesn’t have to share his time? Is no one really married in heaven? That’s not very fair to the two women is it, especially to the first one. She doesn’t know she’s getting hosed until later, the second one knows it from day one, so she can prepare.

Will it be like Big Love? It’s about a mormon guy who has multiple wives. They each have houses next to each other, but all the backyards are connected and they share a big swimming pool. The man alternates different nights at each house.

Anyway, just some thoughts. Let me know yours.

Got this gem of an email from somebody this week.

You may have heard that the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten that day, making him late to work.

One woman was late because her alarm clock failed to ring. One had a child that dawdled. One of them missed his bus.

One was late because he was stuck on the NJ Turnpike behind an auto accident. One’s car wouldn’t start.

One spilled food and had to take time to change.

So, the next time your morning seems to be going wrong, don’t be frustrated. Smile. It may be that God is at work, watching over you.

Let’s actually break this down and think logically about this.

Apparently God planned the day kindergarten started that year in that particular school. God caused a womans alarm clock to fail, caused a child to be fussy, and prevented another person from reaching the bus on time. God actually caused a car accident for another person. (I hope no one was hurt!) God also made it to where this persons car wouldn’t start. God also actually caused a person to spill food on themselves to where they couldn’t just wipe it up and move on, they had to change outfits.

Look at all these wonderful things God did to save these lives on that dreadful day. No way could any of these things be a coincidence, huh?

So let’s look at several of the things God didn’t do that day.

3000 other people made it work on time, didn’t have fussy kids, didn’t have car problems, and were able to control their food enough to prevent any spills. What did those 3000 people do or not do differently? Were none of those 3000 people Christian? Did they all screw up thier prayers that morning?

Several of those 3000 people actually chose to jump out of the buildings. You think they might have turned to God and asked for His help before making that decision? They had a choice between burning to death or falling to their death. What an awful choice to have to make. What an awful position to have to be in.

Why weren’t they worth of a simple coincidence? Why weren’t they worthy of something bigger? God could have made some big fluffy pillows appear right before these people hit the ground. He could have made a giant slide appear all those people could have used. Heck, he could have levitated them out of the building and gently led them to the ground.

No, God had already done what he was going to do that day. He planned the first day of school, unplugged an alarm clock, made a child fussy, sped up a bus, caused a car accident, and spilled some food.

Awesome God, huh?

I’ve started a discussion recently about prayer. I’ve done some research, and like most things, have found someone that has already done the research for me. It’s pretty interesting stuff and makes a few points about prayer and it’s effectiveness. The main point of the site is the group of people who always get a ‘no’ answer with their specific prayer.

Chapter 5 deals specifically with why god won’t heal amputees.

But you can read the rest of the site for some more eye opening discussion.
